Re: [MW:27660] Stainless steel (SA 312 TP 316L) welding

Hi

  • PQR testing requirements shall be as per ASME Sec IX-QW 140 ( 2017 edition) , other than these all are additional test only. Additional testing on PQR carried out to ensure that production weld suitable for its indeed purpose (like hot temperature, low temperature, corrosive media , urea service etc. etc.. ) based on job requirement.
  • During welding /solidification , Formation of delta ferrite phase is not avoidable until you use special filler metal with NIL ferrite. Your final micro structures will have 2 to 8 % ferrite phase. These ferrite levels have significant effect on corrosion, mechanical properties and susceptibility to solidification cracking and other types of material failure. In order to ensure these levels are within range, Ferrite checking is done.
  • The need for conducting ferrite measurements on production weldments shall be specified on client only. Pl check the requirements on specifications / material Requisitions / Drawings, ITPs etc.. if client does not specify any requirements , you can ask your testing laboratory to report ferrite values so that it will be useful for your future Projects.
  • You may also read more on welding metallurgy aspects of austenitic stainless steel like the micro structure change and effect of cooling rate through Fe-Ni Phase diagram and Schaeffer diagram for understanding purpose
  •  You may also have " Ferrite Testing procedure " with reference from ASTM E562 for welding procedure qualification. AWS A4.2 for your production welding and get approval. Choose the client approved ferrite testing EQUIPMENT where many fails to meet.

Dear Prasad,
Please review your project requirement. If it is there, you have to test the same.

Dear sir,

I am going to do PQR for SA 312 TP 316L pipe to pipe of 6" and 7.11mm thickness.

I want to know that, i have to go for ferrite testing or not ?

If not, when it is essential to ferrite testing?

Regards
Prasad

Re: [MW:10788] ON PLOT PIPING & OFF PLOT PIPING

Piping systems involved for the flow lines and gathering lines from the well head isolation valve to the production facility or processing plant isolation valve are determined as OFF PLOT. ON PLOT defines piping system in the processing plant and production platform. ANSI/ASME B31.4 applies for off plot piping system. B31.4 allows the use of either API 1104 or ASME section IX (as appropriate). However, occasionally, a very small system such as piping within 500 feet of a processing plant (some client also said 400 feet) may be declared B31.3 rather than B31.4. When B31.3 is invoked, only ASME Section IX is used. before you decide which code to use for welding procedure and/or welder qualification for pipe welding, you have to know the design and construction code applicable to the system. Please read far enough into scope and diagram illustrating the application of either B31.3 and B31.4 hope this helps rgds 2011/4/21 pradip kumar sil < pradipsil@gmail.com > Dear all, ...

Heat tint (temper) colours on stainless steel surfaces heated in air // Heat tint

Introduction The colour formed when stainless steel is heated, either in a furnace application or in the heat affected zone of welds, is dependent on several factors that are related to the oxidation resistance of the steel. The heat tint or temper colour formed is caused by the progressive thickening of the surface oxide layer and so, as temperature is increased, the colours change.   Oxidation resistance of stainless steels However, there are several factors that affect the degree of colour change and so there is no a single table of colour and temperature that represents all cases. The colours formed can only be used as an indication of the temperature to which the steel has been heated. Factors affecting the heat tint colours formed Steel composition The chromium content is the most important single factor affecting oxidation resistance. The higher the chromium, the more heat resistant the steel and so the development of the heat tint colou...
