Re: [MW:14329] COATING ON SS

This coating requirement on SS material is applied for lines or equipment requiring insualtion.
.
Please refer below para of API 571 for prevention/mitigation of chloride stress cracking. One of the recomendation is coating of materials. Since CSCC is mostly associated with SS and nickel alloys, following recommendation is applicable to these matyerials.

4.5.1.6
Prevention / Mitigation
a) Use resistant materials of construction.
b) When hydrotesting, use low chloride content water and dry out thoroughly and quickly.
c) Properly applied coatings under insulation.
d) Avoid designs that allow stagnant regions where chlorides can concentrate or deposit.
e) A high temperature stress relief of 300 Series SS after fabrication may reduce residual stresses.
However, consideration should be given to the possible effects of sensitization that may occur,
increasing susceptibility to polythionic SCC, possible distortion problems and potential reheat cracking.

Many thanks Mr.Ahmed,
Is the application of coating for either insulation and corrosion protection ok?

Dear Mr. Mokrani,

Many client specification and API standards or RP recommends application of coating on Stainless steel materials prior to insualtion to minimize/eliminate possibility of chloride stress corrosion cracking. This requirment is also in Aramco specification.

Gentelmen,
We are fabricating a SS 316L Fuel Gas scrubber
For PP reasons, an insulation layer has to be applied. The client was asking to apply  an anticorrosion coating to the stainless steel material of the vessel for corrosion protection in marine environment.

In our experience we never did that for SS.

What do you think?.
Is there any STD/Code that force that?

Design code: AMSE VIII Div 1
Location: Offshore Plateform
