Beside the risk of pitting,originally some owner fear from Stress Corrosion Cracking (external type) that may occur under insulation ,Since insulation during service may fail mechanically or due to other causes the risk of Corrosion Under Insulation CUI is high. please read the attached article you will find valuable data. Gentelmen, We are fabricating a SS 316L Fuel Gas scrubber For PP reasons, an insulation layer has to be applied. The client was asking to apply an anticorrosion coating to the stainless steel material of the vessel for corrosion protection in marine environment.
In our experience we never did that for SS.
What do you think?. Is there any STD/Code that force that?
