[MW:1614] Re: API 5L X85

Dear Mr. Babu,

As per API 5L, the chemical composition and the CE is restricted by API 5L
(CEIIW/CEPCM as per table-4). However, the chemical composition may be
specified as agreed between the supplier and purchaser. I feel you may need
to check the original purchase documents for each lot of pipe (see note-f
to table-4). Particularly, the impurities that contribute to the CE
calculation (like, Nb, Cr, Ni, Mn, B, Cu, etc.) are very important to
control for CE.

So far as the grade X85 is concerned, it might be an intermediate grade as
allowed by API 5L (Refer 9.2.1 of API 5L). Also, you need to know whether
it is X85M or 85Q.

For AWS qualification, if the chemical composition is substantially
different, you may need to use different electrodes and naturally,
procedure qualification (PQR) would be separate. For long time, I have not
referred AWS D1.1, hence I would not be able to give more input on this.

Hope to have clarified

Dear Mr. Babu,

as far as I know (I don't have the spec with me right now), material grade
X85 is not an API 5L grade. I'm familiar with X70, X80, X90 and X100, and
generally, these materials have a maximum allowed CE value of about 0.43.

The CE values you are referring to are very high and they differ a lot and
therefore it seems likely that you have to prepare two separate procedures.

Hi,

I have the material, API 5L X85 bought from two suppliers, and we
developed the Procedure for welding of this material for the T, K, and Y
joint.

The carbon equivalent of this material vary by considerable amount by two
suppliers (0.55, 0.78),

As per D1.1, CE is not an essential variable, but metallurgical point of
view, there will be major changes in the weldments properties and
behaviour,

How to take it into account this variation in Procedure? Is it allowable
variation as per API 5L spec?

Thanks & Regards,

K.Babu
