[MW:1583] flash butt welding

hello friends,

             i am working in an wheel manufacturing company. in that plates are coiled and welded by flash butt welding. i had doubt that the distance between the two end of the plate play a major role of causing the defect in FBW process. if so how, any one can tell. the material used is carbon steel.
