RE: [MW:18872] Re: OVERLAY CHEMISTRY

Hi Vinod,

Right welding technique is crucial in order to minimize the dilution with the parent metal. Some general guide lines can be found in Avesta Welding website. The composition on second layer can normally meet the requirements on all weld metal even if it may with boarder-lines values . The composition of 3rd layer will meet requirements. The distance from base metal to 2nd and 3rd layer is depending on welding parameters but is typically:

-Thickness 1st layer = 2-3 mm
-Thickness 2nd layer = 2.5-6 mm
-Thickness 3rd layer = 5.5-8 mm

The corrosion resistance is depending on the surface quality and the chemical composition on the surface. However to measure the corrosion resistance on weld overlay is quite tricky because you need to take a sample that has "undiluted" weld metal on both sides. This means that you need to make a weld overlay that is 7-10 mm thick in order to take samples from top down to 3 mm from base material. If not you will test the corrosion resistance on the first layer and this is normally not good enough.

Weld overlay of duplex stainless steel can be done using Avesta 2205 GMAW filler from the very first layer.

Hope this helps

Subject: [MW:18864] Re: OVERLAY CHEMISTRY

sir,
for my second question i would like to know at what actual height should i test to get pure chemistry for all mention consumable , if anybody has tried at actual
because my duplex E2209 by SMAW failed in carbon and nickel.

i am preparing PQR for overlay with the following on SA516 GR 70

1)DUPLEX E2209 (SMAW 3.15 dia)

2) INCONEL ERNiCr-3 (MIG 1.2dia solid wire)

3) MONEL ERNICU-7 + ERCUNI (MIG 1.2 dia sloid wire)

4) DUPLEX ER2209 (MIG 1.2 dia solid wire)

my question is
1) is the pure chemistry of filler(consumable) must for qualifying CORROSION RESISTANT OVERLAY PQR
2) at what HEIGHT from base metal can I expect to get pure chemistry for above all consumable?
