Re: [MW:7417] Re: Using WPS qualified as per D1.1 to weld pipework as per ASME IX

Hi Philip,

Apart from the below suggestions, I note that you have specified Pipe work. So I presume it as ASME B31.3 (piping).

If it is the case the only constraint would be Non-destructive testing i.e. there are category of NDE criteria for ASME B31.3 e.g. Severe cyclic which more onerous than AWS cyclic loading. First thing is you need to know where you intend to apply this procedure i.e. type of loads involved in the piping (refer ASME B31.3 clause 341.4 and Table 341.3.2).

If it is normal fluid service then the respective NDE acceptance criteria it is deemed equivalent to AWS static loading. Whilst you need to ensure all the mechancials comply with ASME B31.3 (if so) / ASME IX.

If your PQR has not been NDE assessed to ASME B31.3 (or other ASME design code), then I would suggest to perform a supplementary coupon and carry out NDE as per ASME which would suffice your requirement.

Other option would be weld the first production jpoint in line with AWS procedure and NDE as per ASME B31.3 (or applicable ASME design code) to ensure the compliance. For this route you may need a Technical Concession from your Client.

Sridharan

Dear Philip,

As per understanding, if your going to use the WPS for the pipe work meant for structural works or loading , you can adopt the WPS prepared as per ASME.

If not, then you need run separate qualification as per ASME Sec IX

Hello Mr. Philip,

You can ask your lab to certify the test as per ASME Sec IX and AWS
D1.1 and you can prepare separate WPS as per Sec IX and D1.1 and use
the same test to prepare PQR then you can use the qualified WPS as per
ASME and AWS D1.1.

I have done the same while i was there in Dubai and same was accepted
by ABSG.

Hello gents,

I have a WPS qualified as per D1.1 - 8 inches for welding structural
work, in 6G position,

My query is can I use these procedure to weld pipe work as per ASME IX
for the same material?

Pls I need further clarification with codes support.
