Re: [MW:27413] Difference between Bolt Torqueing and Bolt Tensioning

sometimes, because of space constraints, when a torque wrench cannot be used, the bolts are tensioned and the nut is tightened by a conventional wrench

2018-02-25 15:31 GMT+02:00 Thompson, Dennis <Dennis.Thompson@teaminc.com>:

PK M,

Bolt torqueing refers to the circumferential moment (ft-lbs, or m-N) exerted on a bolt-nut assembly, or on a bolt and threaded-hole assembly, to tighten the assembly.

The tightening of the assembly imparts a tensile stress (lbs/in2, or N/m2) in the bolt, and a compressive stress in the components being clamped between the bolt-nut assembly, or between the bolt and the component containing the threaded hole.

Therefore, bolt tensioning is the result of bolt torqueing.

D. Thompson
