Hi,
Working with European and/or ISO standards, the locations are stated in ISO 13916.
For thickness (t) less than 50 mm, interpass and preheat should be measured at a distance of 4 x t from the grove, however max. 50 mm from it.
For thickness (t) of more than 50 mm, you may end up with a distance of 75 mm

My understanding:- | |||||||
1-Preheat Temperature shall be measured minimum 3"(75mm) from groove joint | |||||||
2-Interpass Temperature shall be measures maximum 10mm from groove joint |
