[MW:26748] Re: Welding of 316L pipe with F347 flange

Hi,

There are two ways to approach this problem,

1) To go strictly by codes & standards, ASME (Sec IX)for welding does not consider chemical composition of weld metal as essential variable, so as long as the weldment passes tensile, bend & impact(if toughness is required) tests, the weldment is acceptable. Note that for weld overlay, Chemical composition is an essential variable.

2) If the application environment  of the product is susceptible to pitting corrosion, then it is a problem that needs to be rectified.  Possible reasons may be migration/segregation of Mo towards any of the base metal because of improper welding parameter/procedure used. Performing a chemical analysis across the welded specimen can possibly be a first step in identifying the root cause for this problem.

Regards,
Bala.

Hi,
We have a to weld a 316L pipe to F347 flange using 316L electrode.after welding during PMI it has been noted that Mo content in weld metal is only 0.15--0.21 range. Is there any document which specifies how much dilution can be acceptable
