RE: [MW:18339] Is SMAW is restricted to small bore pipe i.e., below 50 NB

Hi Ramesh,

For small diameter pipe fabrication involving groove and socket welds, GTAW is always the preferred welding technique due to :-
  • consistent weld quality & good penetration
  • ease of maneuvering the weld puddle within a very small working area
  • control of heat input,  better for preventing overheating of pipes
  • and last of all good workmanship.
Design & fabrication  codes will not dictate what welding process is to be used for fabrication. It's the fabricator's wise call.

The  rationale of your client is quite reasonable for getting good fabrication quality

Thanks.

Dear Experts!
At our project Hydraulic service pipe line is there, we
have to weld the 15 NB size, A312 TP-304L material pipe (butt & socket
joints). So, our client suggest that go for GTAW and please tell me in
which code it is given as my client said.

Thanks in advance
