Re: [MW:18498] Repair procedure

Dear Sir,

l agree with your good technical issue sir,so hope we can keep and touch with you,but they can use welding (root/hot pass) after that filling they can follow up with fcaw, this procedure must be qualified and need to monitor preheat temperature, heat input according repair procedure, they most important is polarity of current SMAW equipment.

Hi Sugu ,

The reason for not allowing the SAW generally for repair welds are, bevel preparation is very important for SAW process,  the shape and size of excavation ( After removing the weld defect ) either in Cap, MidWay thickness , SAW process is not accessible to weld on the excavated smaller area that is on the boat shaped gouge area with limited access , cannot make proper weld layers on such smaller areas which is gouged and SAW is high heat input process , give more hardness , affects HAZ .

So, for Good Engg Practice, it is better to use GTAW to give weld deposits , good accessible on the excavated areas,  no slag presence, less heat input, good and neat weld bead on the area of concern, that you can obtain .
If we use SMAW on the gouged area, slag removal by grinding would be difficult .

If you find defects either by RT or UT on the original welds, for example a big slag on the midway of weldmetal, then gouge to remove the defects entirely and also the HAZ areas , do NDT either by MPI or PT to check any defects on the gouged areas , weld with an approved WPS , do NDT again after welding by RT Or UT & MPI , whatever your procedure mentions.

Hi Raj Susi  , what is the thickness of pipe and what type of defect it is , is it on the Cap, Midway, what is the depth and width of the defect, whether the entire weld removed and planning to make new bevel preparation totally .

Other experts, can share their view and their experiences, when you have attempted such type of repair welds .

Cheers ,

Dear Sir,

may l know why no one will allow you to do repair weld with SAW process ?
what suppose weld repair procedure will said?
how many type(SMAW,FCAW,SAW,TIG) welding process can do repair procedure?
did it compulasary to do MPI after defect remove from weld?
if not follow up ...........with mpi ...wat action is going to be taken?

Dears ,

Generally, Weld Repair Procedure is like a written Work Instruction , which explains about , the method of repair, WPS No. Welding Process used, NDT before and after welding etc and attach the applicable WPS with the Work Instruction and get approved with TPI first, it is a professional way of doing repair welds,

Anyway, If you have GTAW or SMAW qualified WPS , any one of these process is applicable , depends up on the defects condition .

I am sure, no one will allow you to do repair weld with SAW process .

Check in your client spec , has given any simulation repair procedure to be qualified Or the same WPS which was used for production welding , can be used for repair welds.

Hope it clears Men.

Dear Raj,

Your Welding Engineer is right. As per code we don't need to qualify separate weld repair procedure, but at the same time please check client fabrication procedure. If it is mentioned separately to qualify the  procedure then follow-up TPI instructions.

Dear Experts
Good evening.
In our company we have some repairs to be done and we dont have repair procedures separately.
But we only follow the NCR disposition made by welding engineer. Which has some instructions to follow ie removal of defect, same wps to be used as per production weld, nde to be done as per job scope.
So now our TPI is asking for separate repair procedure.
In my previous company we did have separate repair procedures. But here we dont have any.
Our welding engineer is telling us that our repair is before PWHT and therefore we dont need a repair procedure separately.
Is it a must that we Should really have repair procedure ( whether before or after PWHT)?
THANKS
raj
