Pramod, Phosphorous is an undesirable element which produces a hard and brittle compound which has low melting point in steels and constitutes hot cracking problems. Modern steel making process restrict their amount even 0.010%. However, Phosphorous and Sulfur are not always harmful and in cases where welding or fracture toughness are not important, deliberate additions of sulfur may be added up to 0.15% to promote free machining qualities of steel, and small additions of phosphorus may be added to non-weldable weathering grade steels.
