As per the ASME B16.5, Socket welded flanges are acceptable for a size of upto 2.5" in Pressure class 1500#. Thus there is no harm if you use the said joint configuration for your design. But many clients do not allow socket welds for pressure class above 600# rating. It again depends on the fluid type and safety hazard in case of failure. I do not see any advantage of cost in material, but ease in fabrication may be the only reason making this option useful.
