--Mr. Thakkar,
Please find some references for welding of P11a steel which would be of help to you in narrowing down to correct choice. What's the grade being welded SA 353 or SA 553?. The choices for SMAW welding electrodes could be as follows:-
- E-NiCr-Mo-6- with A.C power source, usually preferred to avoid any shop or field welding problems such as arc blow.
- E-NiCrMo-3-(Inconel 625 or equivalent) with both A.C and D.C power sources.
- E-NiCrMo-4-Hastelloy C-276 type electrodes ,with both A.C and D.C power sources, but is sometimes difficult to tackle (hot cracking??)
- ENiMo-8. The nominal composition 70 Ni, 18 Mo, 7 Fe, 3 W, 2 Cr. Electrodes of this classification are popularly used for welding 9 percent nickel steel such as ASTM A 333, A 334, A 353, A 522, and A 553. Recommended for A.C.
Note majority of the electrode specifications inSFA 5.11 are formulated for D.C. However for selection of power sources for a specific type of electrode it's always advisable to consult the manufacturer including the guaranteed impact results at minus -196 deg C for above (as appropriate). If you get the impact test results with both A.C and D.C power sources , then always there would be better guarantee for impact at such low (cryogenic temperature).9%Ni steel is notorious for residual magnetism, so A.C electrodes are generally preferred also A.C gives better impact properties under the same welding parameters.Thanks.

As per ASME SEC II-C most suitable consumable is ENiCrMo-6. However can I use ENiCrMo-3? If yes why & if no why?
