Dear Manpreet,
Yes, I agree with the above explanation but steel i have one question to you why heat input is supplemetary essential variable in ASME code. where as mechanical propeties like UTS & YS are more affected by heat input as specified in artical attached by Kathalingam babu, so as per attached artical it shall be essential variable.
Kindly suggest.

Bhavesh

Dear Bhavesh,
With due respect, Heat Input depends on mechanical properties such as Toughness, Tensile and yeild strength and Hardness.
For toughness, it's not certain, to an extent increasing then decreasing, but for others it has monotonic relationship.
With refernce to the steel mentioned, ASTM 516 gr.70 (C-Mn-Si), Tensile strength of Weld metal would decrease due to coarsening of structure and fromation of grain boundary ferrite, When SMAW used, with Higher Heat Input, C-Mn-Si content would reduce therefore, Ultimetaly it would also effect Tensile properties of Weld metal.
If you still disagree with above explanation, Please provide some basis to substantiate your claim. On Sun, 19 Dec 2010 12:18:50 +0530 Bhavesh Patel wrote
