Dear Sir,

The meaning of peening depends on which application you are looking
for. As already mentioned by Mr. Dumbre one of the possibilities is
shot peening for introducing compressive stresses in materials
surfaces up to 0.4 mm depth. An other possibility are the so called
patented high frequency peening methods like Pneumatic Impact
Treatment, which also introduces compressive stresses in material
surfaces but in this case only local at stress risers and up to 2.5 mm
depth with the aim to increase materials and/or weld details fatigue
resistance. This technology is also used for reducing tensile stresses
during welding to achieve less distortion afterwards.
