Re: [MW:8044] Welding with submerged arc

Dear john
first consider the bevel preparation.if it is single BEVEL go for SMAW root and SAW for filling, turn it ,back gouge and do fill and cap then again turn and do the capping, WELD SEQUENCE should be followed strictly, otherwise there is a chance of distortion.

If there is no RT requirement go for squire edge joint and keep only 2mm gap , in this case you can do direct saw,but above mentioned weld sequence should be followed.

I am needing to run submerged arc weld on 15 mm thick plate.
I would like to run as follows.
Root run.
Backchip on back side of the vee.
Turn over and run the sub arc into the original root.
Can anyone offer any advice or reasons why this cannot be done.
What would the minimum thickness for the root and backchip before using subarc be.
What dia wire and amps would you recommend
