longitudinal and girth welds on shells, 100% penetration and 100% UT
inspection. (Single pass inside & outside.)
A few notes:
1. A good fit-up is required, any gaps and one will blow-through.
2. Watch the ID as you place the outside pass. a Medium orange color if it
starts getting too bright reduce the current quickly, or you end up with a
burn-through.
3. Watch the spacing between the electrode, too little the arcs interfere
with each other too large and the out-gassing of the leading arc will cause
problems with the trailing arc.
4. Thinner shells were run on a head & tail stock machine with a C&B. Heavy
shells on a roller bed with a C&B.
5.If one has a poor fit-ups use GMAW to add a filler to close.

Good morning
Why not use strip?

Hello Shadab
I was plaanning to use Tandem SAW for 25mm thk butt joint in a shell of @3m
dia.
I had gone through various literatures of reputed consumable manufacturers
wherin it was mentioned that tandem SAW can be used for 15mm thickness and
above. But if you see practically tandem SAW will cause distortion and
ovality in thin walled shells in shop!!
Thus i am very much convinced by what Mr.Hegde has practically recommended
i.e 35mm thickness and above..

Hi friends
I would like to know the "Optimum thickness" of shell wherein we can
use Tandem SAW.
The shell MOC is SA516Gr.70.
