Pre heating of weld joints is to remove the tensile residual stresses, due
to welding and to homogenise the material. Particularly tensile residual
stresses- If the tensile residual stress of the material exceeds more than
50 % of the yield stress of the material, it will lead to localised
yielding/cracking.
