[MW:3527] Re: Fracture test

Dear Mr. Koldas,

I haven't any pictures available but I carried out a lot of fracture
tests during my job as head of a mechanical testing laboratory in the
Netherlands a few years ago.
I'm not sure which information you are looking for but I can explain
something about these fracture tests.
Fracture tests for WPQ according to EN 287-1 need to be carried out
according to specification EN 1320.
Sample type en size depends on if it is a fillet or a butt weld.

- For fillet welds you have to weld a test sample of min. 150 mm
length for welder qualification acc. to EN 287-1 from which you cut a
piece of 100 mm from the mid-section.
This sample will be flattened with a press in order to determinate any
present inclusions and/or leak of fusion at the weld root. If specimen
doesn't fracture you may cut a groove in the weld cap in front of
flattening in order to get a fracture.
For fillet welds where facing problems to get them fractured you also
may replace one fracture test sample by way of 4 macro specimens.

- For but welds you also need a test weld from which you cut min. 2
specimens of 50 mm wide. At the side of this samples you need to cut a
groove with a depth of 5 mm at each side of the specimen. After this
you can pull the specimens until they fracture in a standard tensile
test machine or you may bend them till fracture. For this test you
need to leave the weld cap and penetration at the root in the as
welded condition.

- After sepcimens are fractured you have to examine the surface
according to EN-ISO 25817 / ISO 5817 level B. Any indications not
acceptable according to level B results in rejection of the welder
qualification.

So sorry no pictures available but perhaps this information will help
you.

Best Regards,

Herman Pieper
