[MW:14812] RE: 14811] Why Tungsten Electrode in TIG?

Mohammed,

GTAW process generates a very intense arc, the temperature could be anything upwards of 300 Deg C. Copper melts a temperature far lower than this. Also "W" has higher atomic no than Cu( 74 vs. 29).This means more number of available electrons in tungsten at any point of time causing better thermionic emission.

That's the reason why Tungsten, in various  alloyed forms as thoriated, or lanthaniated or zirconiated are the only choices for noncomsumable electrode for GTAW.

Additionally see the attached text for your reference.

Thanks.

Subject: [MW:14811] Why Tungsten Electrode in TIG?

Dear Experts

In TIG Welding why Tungsten TIP is used rather then Copper TIP?I mean what is the drawback of Copper Electrode over tungsten electrode?
Can any of you please reply
