RE: [MW:9340] PWHT requirements for the Branch weld

Since it is NACE service, please check the with designer for PWHT by process reasons, if PWHT is not required by process reason , you can calculate the throat (or thickness thro any plane) as per para 331.1.3 and it should not exceed 40mm, if it exceeds 40mm , PWHT is required.

Subject: [MW:9335] PWHT requirements for the Branch weld

Dear All,

Please provide the PWHT requirement for the Pipe to Weldolet joint.

Main Run Pipe material    : API 5L Gr.B- PSL2

Run Pipe Size                    : 20 inch, Sch : 100 ( Thick : 32.54 mm)

Branch connection            : Weldolet ( 20 x 6 inch , Sch : 120 )

Weldolet material            :  A 105.

Weldolet attachment       : as per Fig : 328.5.4 D- Sketch 1 of ASME B 31.3

Reference standard        : ASME B -31.3 & NACE MR-0175.

As the welding  shall meet the requirements as per NACE MR 0175, whether can we waive the PWHT requirements for the pipe to  branch weld, if the hardness value is less than 22 HRC.

Regards

N.S.Sivashankar
