Re: [MW:8310] Possibility of hydotesting of the components of vessel

Dear Karthik

As said below the vent nozzle is set-in with the blind flange. so PWHT is mandatory. My query is can i hydrotest only the the blind flange & 2"vent nozzle which are welded together, separately.
Since the blind is bolted to the body flange, there is no weld joint in between.
Does code allows this.

Hi,

When i look at the drawing,i think you dont need to do PWHT since it is a nozzle(2") to flange welding.I think your welding joint is fillet or groove with fillet. If it is so,and the throat thickness is not exceed 13mm,you dont need to do PWHT.

If it is of groove welds(butt joints),the nominal weld thickness exceeds 38mm need PWHT.

Anyhow, without joint type i can't conclude this now.

Please check your joint design and weld.If it is same as i stated then you dont need to go for PWHT.

Thanks & Regards,

(Karthik)

Dear All

I would like to know if it is possible to do hydrotest of individual component of a vessel. A typical case is as below.(refer the attached sketch for quick reference)

we have vessel for Aramco filters, Designed as per ASME Sec VIII Div.1 and is U stamp. The filter has 12" Standard CAP welded at one end of the 12" pipe and a top body flange 12"WNRF 300# welded at the other end of the pipe, with a
12"BLRF 300# blind flange and a 2"vent nozzle (LWNRF 300#)on the top of the blind flange.
The
2"vent nozzle is welded with a "sent in" configuration to the blind flange. so this has generated the requirement of PWHT only for the blind welded along with vent nozzle , as the 12"BLRF 300# has a thickness of 50.8mm and for SA-105 material the PWHT becomes mandatory above 38mm. The vessel is stamped as PHT (partial heat treatment)

My problem.
We have forgot to do PWHT for the blind flange welded to the 2"vent nozzle and the hydrotest is already performed.

Now we will do the
PWHT for the blind flange welded to the 2"vent nozzle and hydrotest only these parts seperately by providing a dummy vessel arrangement to support the hydrotest of the these components . we do not want to hydrotest the complete vessel as we would like to go for blasting and painting for these vessel because of large quantity.

Is the above meeting the code requirement.

Thaksen
