[MW:3348] RE: 3344] RE: 3331] Re: Base Metal

From Making , Shaping, and Treating of Steel, by United States Steel, c 1985, published by AISE, pg.700.

"Killed Steel - The term killed indicates that steel has been deoxidized sufficiently for it to lie perfectly quiet when poured into an ingot mold. There is no evolution of gas in the mold and the top surface of the ingot soldifies with relative rapidity. Killed steel generally is used when a homogeneous structure is required in the finished steel. Alloy steels, forging steels, and steels for carburizing are of thes type, when the essential qualifty is soundness. In general, all steels with more than 0.30% carbon content are killed. . . ."

"Semikilled Steel -Semikilled steel is deoxidized less than killed steel, and there is enough oxygen present in the molten steel to reat with carbon and from gas after the steel ispoured into molds. Semikilled steel finds wide application in structural shapes, plates and bar products. This steel generally has a carbon content within the range of 0.15 to 0.30%. The usual practice is to bring the carbon content of the steel in the furnace to the desired carbon content for tapping. Ferro manganese may be added to the furnace , to the ladle, or to both. Carbon, ferrosilicon, and aluminum may be added to the ladle. Usually most deoxidation is don in the ladle so that only a few grams of aluminim perton of steel weil berequired as a mold addition to produce the desire level of deoxidation so that the gas bubbles are trapped in upper portion o fthe ingot during solidification."
