[MW:22680] RE: 22679] Lateral Expansion - High Alloy Impact test

Saravanan,

Lateral expansion is a measure of ductility in addition to absorbed impact energy(impact values). Austenitic alloys always fail in ductile mode , with very high impact strength. Higher the ductility more is the LE. As these alloys have an inherent ductile nature , causing high impact values, the other way screen them is though lateral expansion.

Please see the links below and also ASTM/ASME -A/SA-370.

Thanks

Subject: [MW:22679] Lateral Expansion - High Alloy Impact test

Dear Metallurgists ,

Could you please explain that,

why lateral expansion value of Min. 0.38 mm given in ASME Sec VIII Div I , UHA-51 for Charpy Impact Tests, instead of Joule Value for High Alloy steels like Duplex, Super Duplex etc.

What is the significance of Lateral expansion for such High Alloys.

Regards,
Saravanan.
