RE: [MW:22703] Flare Bevel Groove Joint

The flare bevel groove and flare V groove weld in AWS D1.1 are not full thickness welds. You will not get penetration anywhere near the root using conventional structural welding processes as addressed in AWS D1.1. See the design throats that are assumed in Table 2.1.

I might also add that Table 2.1 and the prequalified groove weld details in Figure 3.3 are based upon smaller radii, such as solid rounds and radii at the corners of box tubes, not the large diameter pipe detail shown in the sketch. I don't think that is stated anywhere.

I suggest you rely solely upon clause 4.11.5 (2010 version of AWS D1.1) for your application.

The standard flare-groove detail is P10 in ASW D1.1 indicating that it is a PJP weld. If a weld size is not indicated, it is assumed it is a full thickness weld & I believe this is where the confusion comes in. It's a partial penetration with full thickness and that's where the argument starts. This weld could be used as a full penetration weld (and held to that testing criteria) but the detailer must be specific about the intentions, particularly if it is used in a critical joint.

Hi Experts

As per AWS D1.1 2010, whether Flare Bevel Groove Joint is a CJP or PJP?  As per AWS A 2.4, the flare grove joint usually have a symbol of S(E), S represent the Distance of point of tangency to top member and E will be groove weld size. However in the IFC drawing we recieved , does not have any of S(E)?

Can you guys let me know whether it is PJP or CJP? Any clause in AWS or relevant code to support this?

Attached will be the sketch of drawing.
