Hi, As per ASME Sec IX, WPS qualified in Vertical position can be used for all positions. Thing is WPS is a Procedure for Joining Base metals with a Joining Electrode to know Physical & Mechanical Properties . So For entire positions it can be applicable. Only difference will come in WPQ ( Welder performance) ...in this case position is main criteria and vertical position can not qualify all positions, For WPQ you have to follow Position restrictions as per Sec IX .Using same WPS u have to qualify in different positions 2G ,3G & 4G.

Hi As per Cl. QW 405.2 , in WPS qualification, Vertical Up position qualifies all position. But always, the class people not ready to accept this ? Is there any Official interpretation or clarification given by ASME or AWS on this.
