Re: Re: [MW:8173] weld thicness

Hi

This fire has been discussed earlier.

Pls find the attached article , which is clearly says that, the welder has to weld the entire circumference.

Though the answer is logical based , but it is acceptable and recognized by AWS Committee.

Hi,
Please do not try to mislead under confusion . in this way for example if your say 5 welders qualified maximum range is 10mm. if u want to weld 50 mm thick weld how you will weld ? will you ask your 5 welder to weld each 10mm ? under which code ? again u read the code carefully.

QW-452.1(b)
THICKNESS OF WELD METAL QUALIFIED
Thickness, t, of Weld Metal in Thickness of Weld
the Coupon, in. (mm) Metal Qualified
[Notes (1) and (2)] [Note (3)]
All 2t
1⁄2 (13) and over with a Maximum to be
minimum of three layers welded
NOTES:
(1) When more than one welder and/or more than one process and
more than one filler metal F-Number is used to deposit weld metal
in a coupon, the thickness, t, of the weld metal in the coupon
deposited by each welder with each process and each filler metal
F-Number in accordance with the applicable variables under QW-
404 shall be determined and used individually in the "Thickness,
t, of Weld Metal in the Coupon" column to determine the "Thickness
of Weld Metal Qualified."
(2) Two or more pipe test coupons with different weld metal thickness
may be used to determine the weld metal thickness qualified and
that thickness may be applied to production welds to the smallest
diameter for which the welder is qualified in accordance with
QW-452.3.
(3) Thickness of test coupon of 3⁄4 in. (19 mm) or over shall be used
for qualifying a combination of three or more welders each of
whom may use the same or a different welding process.

Hi,

*Code allows. Refer Interpreatation IX-77-19 of ASME Sec IX;
A welder qualfied in a given procedure and for a given max. thickness may weld on a pipe of greater wall thickness provided the thickness deposited does not excedd his qualification. However, the welder must follow a WPS that has a PQR qualification necessary to weld the full pipe thickness in production.

* Additional info, refer QW-306 of ASME Sec IX allowscombination qualification for 2 or more welders in a single coupon

No not at all. no codes permit.

>try to requalify them. always try to qualify 13mm and above with multilayers then he will be eligible to weld unlimited thk as per sec IX. same time you have to consider which code you are using as per job requirement.

First simultaneously, each willweld approx 10mm thick including root half the circum, as they are qualified in 12 mm only. Then the interchange their location and they will complete the remaining welding.
Basically these 2 welders who are qualified upto 12 mm are welding 20mm thickness joint, but at any given location they are welding 10mm thickness.

Re: [MW:34105] SA266 GR4N 4 Cycle SPWHT

Hi,  You are correct, Minimum refers to the one cycle for which this part will expose until final work shop PWHT. hence mill test certificate shall include this.  Max. SPWHT, refers to additional cycles of heat treatment that are reserved for future repairs during equipment lifetime.  Again, these simulated no. Of cycles shall be specified in MTC.  The idea is we need to make sure that steel mechanical properties are not compromised upon exposure to multiple repairs (i e 4 cycles in your case).  One could say, if steel is subjected to 4 cycles and is ok, then it should by defacto be good for one cycle, yet, this is wrong assumption cause mechanical problems and microstructure of materials varies accordingly based on no. Of cycles for which material will expose. This is apparent in alloy steel and especially for impact test values as an example.  In your case, this forged CS with properties before PWHT can be understood to be " as forged" condition (i.e. Wit...

Heat tint (temper) colours on stainless steel surfaces heated in air // Heat tint

Introduction The colour formed when stainless steel is heated, either in a furnace application or in the heat affected zone of welds, is dependent on several factors that are related to the oxidation resistance of the steel. The heat tint or temper colour formed is caused by the progressive thickening of the surface oxide layer and so, as temperature is increased, the colours change.   Oxidation resistance of stainless steels However, there are several factors that affect the degree of colour change and so there is no a single table of colour and temperature that represents all cases. The colours formed can only be used as an indication of the temperature to which the steel has been heated. Factors affecting the heat tint colours formed Steel composition The chromium content is the most important single factor affecting oxidation resistance. The higher the chromium, the more heat resistant the steel and so the development of the heat tint colou...
