Re: [MW:35215] Re: CAN A WELDER QUALIFIED TO ASME IX ALLOWED TO WELD STRUCTURES USING AWS D1.1 PREQUALIFIED WPS

A welder who is qualified in the 6G position to ASME Section IX may be able to weld structures using a WPS that is prequalified per AWS D1.1, but there are several important considerations:

1. Qualification Scope: ASME Section IX qualifications are specific to the processes and positions outlined in that section. If the WPS from AWS D1.1 is compatible with the welder's qualifications (e.g., same welding process, material type, and thickness), then it may be acceptable.

2. WPS Compliance: The WPS must meet the requirements of AWS D1.1, including any necessary prequalification conditions. The welder must be familiar with the specifics of the AWS D1.1 code.

3. Employer's Policies: Different employers may have specific policies regarding the use of WPS from different codes, so it is essential to check with the employer or project requirements.

4. Testing and Performance: Even if the welder is qualified under ASME Section IX, they may still need to demonstrate their ability to perform according to the specific WPS being used under AWS D1.1, especially if the WPS has different requirements.

In summary, while it is possible for a welder qualified under ASME Section IX to use a WPS prequalified under AWS D1.1, verification of compatibility and compliance with project requirements is crucial.

Dear Gents,

As per AWS D.1.1

Para 6.2.2.1 Previous Performance Qualification.
Previous performance qualification tests of welders , welding operators , and tack welders that are properly documented are acceptable with the approval of the Engineer. The acceptability of performance qualification to other standards is the Engineer 's responsibility, to be exercised based upon
either the specific structure or service conditions , or both.

Dear Mr. Aneesh,

According to AWS D1.1 2020 - Part 5.1  Welders, welding operators and tack welders that use prequalified WPSs shall be qualified in conformance with Clause 6, Part C or Clause 10, Part D for tubulars.

For Aramco 12-SAMSS-007 section 7.5  Welding procedures and individual welders shall be qualified in accordance with the requirements of AWS D1.1/D1.1M, AWS D1.3, AWS D1.8/D1.8M or AWS D14.1/ D14.1M as appropriate.

If the structural items construction code is AWS D1.1 - Both WPS and Welder Qualification should be as per AWS D1.1 only.

Dear Experts

Please advise if a welder qualified in 6G position to ASME Sec IX , is allowed to Weld structures using WPS which is prequalified to AWS D.1.1

Or is it mandatory to perform separate welder qualification using AWS D.1.1 WPS to weld structures

This is for Saudi Aramco Project

KINDLY ADVICE.

Thanks

Aneesh
