[MW:35196] Clarification on Subsize Impact Specimens for PQR According to API 650

 Dear Experts?

We obtained a value of 26J(avg) for P1 G2 material during procedure qualification with impact requirements, whereas the acceptance criteria according to API 9.2.2.5 is 27J(Avg). We used a subsize specimen of 7.5 x 10 mm. Is there any relaxation or allowance for subsize specimens in this context? If so, where can I find this information?

Regards,
Binto George

Re: [MW:35201] Filler wire for 321H

you may not get 347 /321 with minimum 0.04 % C
u will get commercial grade of 0.08 %C maximum, if u required, Ask supplier to give with minimum 0.04 C.   It is not possible with base metal carbon content of 0.04 to 0.1C which is high carbon for application high temp service.

chances of Martensite due to rapid cooling(faster cooling due to lower interpass temp 200C).
1. Consider raising the interpass temperature to around 250-300°C
2. Consider  PWHT direct before final weld cooled down.

Check the heat input reading for the test coupon.

The mechanical test reading will change If the heat input is high or low from the required values.

Re: [MW:35209] WELD DISTANCE AS PER API 650

In API 650, the allowable distance between vertical welds (also known as vertical joints or seams) in the shell of a welded steel storage tank is specified to prevent overlap of weld seams, which could affect the structural integrity of the tank.

According to API 650, Section 5.1.5.4:

  • The minimum distance between adjacent vertical weld seams on the same shell course should not be less than 3 times the thickness of the shell plate or 500 mm (20 inches), whichever is greater.

This requirement ensures that there is sufficient separation between vertical welds to avoid concentration of stresses and to provide adequate strength in the tank shell.

For example, if the shell plate is 10 mm thick, the minimum distance between vertical welds would be 30 mm (3 × 10 mm). However, since 500 mm is greater than 30 mm, the minimum allowable distance would be 500 mm.

Para 6.2.2.1 Previous Performance Qualification.
Previous performance qualification tests of welders , welding operators , and tack welders that are properly documented are acceptable with the approval of the Engineer. The acceptability of performance qualification to other standards is the Engineer 's responsibility, to be exercised based upon

Re: [MW:35215] Re: CAN A WELDER QUALIFIED TO ASME IX ALLOWED TO WELD STRUCTURES USING AWS D1.1 PREQUALIFIED WPS

A welder who is qualified in the 6G position to ASME Section IX may be able to weld structures using a WPS that is prequalified per AWS D1.1, but there are several important considerations:

1. Qualification Scope: ASME Section IX qualifications are specific to the processes and positions outlined in that section. If the WPS from AWS D1.1 is compatible with the welder's qualifications (e.g., same welding process, material type, and thickness), then it may be acceptable.

2. WPS Compliance: The WPS must meet the requirements of AWS D1.1, including any necessary prequalification conditions. The welder must be familiar with the specifics of the AWS D1.1 code.

3. Employer's Policies: Different employers may have specific policies regarding the use of WPS from different codes, so it is essential to check with the employer or project requirements.

4. Testing and Performance: Even if the welder is qualified under ASME Section IX, they may still need to demonstrate their ability to perform according to the specific WPS being used under AWS D1.1, especially if the WPS has different requirements.

In summary, while it is possible for a welder qualified under ASME Section IX to use a WPS prequalified under AWS D1.1, verification of compatibility and compliance with project requirements is crucial.

Re: [MW:35215] SS 420

For welding stainless steel grade 420, which is a martensitic stainless steel, the following electrodes and filler wires are typically recommended:

Welding Electrode

  • AWS E310-16: This electrode is suitable for welding 420 stainless steel and can provide good corrosion resistance and strength.
  • AWS E309-16: This is another option that can be used for dissimilar metal welding, particularly when joining to other stainless steels.

Filler Wire

  • ER310: This filler wire is often used for welding 420 stainless steel and provides similar properties as the E310 electrode.
  • ER420: Specifically designed for martensitic stainless steels, this filler wire can help achieve the desired mechanical properties in the weld.

Additional Tips

  • Preheat the base material if necessary, as it can help reduce the risk of cracking.
  • Use proper post-weld heat treatment to minimize residual stresses and improve toughness.

Always consider the specific application requirements, including mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, when choosing welding consumables.
