Hello,
We use the same method, i mean ceramic temporary backing for annular to annular joints. Ceramic strip backing is temporary so there will no settlement of backing in asphalt of ring. You can use SAW as well.

Dear expert--we have contract to construct storage tank in the refinery.Here client is telling us not to put backing strip while annular butt joint welding and after welding do radiography of joint and they are telling to put ceramic baking material bottom side of annular plate.pls let me know is it possible to do so.And kindly let me know the name of ceramic material and whats the function for this.Best RegardsTahir AlamPlanning Engineer
