Re: [MW:24353] Digest for materials-welding@googlegroups.com - 3 updates in 3 topics

Dear Sir,
Pls find attached photographs for the defects in new Vessel.
Ni. Cr.Weld overlay done on Circ seam and log seam. During DPT I found the defects which shown in Photographs and these defects are LOF between Weld Overlay and Cladded plate.(LOF at Toe). Due to not proper edge preparation (sqaure Edge) and low Heat input in GMAW process Edges not fused properly.

After getting these defects Manufacturer repaired the defects without my Notice at Night time and offered for PT.
After Repair and Penetrant examination no such defects were found but same kind of defects found after one year when Vessel Inspection carried out  before installation.

So My question is that how Manufacturer can mask the defects temporarily? is it possible to mask such defects to cheat inspectors?

Pls reply as soon as possible.
Special Request to Raghram, and P Goswami

As I understand PAUT & TOFD are NDE UT technics and not NDE methods. Hence NDE Level III in UT is required with training in special technics.Regards

Hi Mostafa, These techniques are very specialized techniques. Not allNDE techs are up to speed with both of these techniques. Please see some guidelinesfrom the BINDT on the same. I'm not sure , where you're located, you may checkwith the local high profile NDE Schools or Companies, who'll have thosepersonnel in their team Thanks.  Pradip Goswami, P.Eng,IWE

dear members ,

i asked if repair codes or standers of pressure equipment allow to
repair metal loss in pressurized equipment with cold weld (BELZONA) if
allow it please give me your reference depending to ASME /API codes or
STD ,thanks for your time

Dear all
I witnessed DPT on incolloy 825 Weld Overlay and found some defects Like
LOF, Porosity and undercuts, Defects were repaired by Subcontractor and
offered and found acceptable but after one year again DPT carried out and
found all the defects like porosity, LOF etc.what may be the reason.

Is it possible that Subcontractor used wrong welding procedure to carry out
the repair and after some period defects gets open.

Pls convay your ideas for the above.

Heat tint (temper) colours on stainless steel surfaces heated in air // Heat tint

Introduction The colour formed when stainless steel is heated, either in a furnace application or in the heat affected zone of welds, is dependent on several factors that are related to the oxidation resistance of the steel. The heat tint or temper colour formed is caused by the progressive thickening of the surface oxide layer and so, as temperature is increased, the colours change.   Oxidation resistance of stainless steels However, there are several factors that affect the degree of colour change and so there is no a single table of colour and temperature that represents all cases. The colours formed can only be used as an indication of the temperature to which the steel has been heated. Factors affecting the heat tint colours formed Steel composition The chromium content is the most important single factor affecting oxidation resistance. The higher the chromium, the more heat resistant the steel and so the development of the heat tint colou...

The Schaeffler and Delong diagrams for predicting ferrite levels in austenitic stainless steel welds

Introduction Ferrite is important in avoiding hot cracking in during cooling from welding of austenitic stainless steels. 'Constitution diagrams' are used to predict ferrite levels from the composition by comparing the effects of austenite and ferrite stabilising elements. The Schaeffler and Delong diagrams are the original methods of predicting the phase balances in austenitic stainless steel welds. Nickel and chromium equivalents A 'nickel equivalent' is calculated for the austenite stabilising elements and a 'chromium equivalent' ferrite stabilising elements. These are used as the axes for the diagrams, which show the compositional equivalent areas where the phases austenite, ferrite, martensite (and mixtures of these) should be present. Although intended to show the phase balance of weld fillers, these diagrams can also be used to illustrate the phase balance of the 'parent' material. There are different diagrams for dif...
