Yes, could be because of improper storage. prolonged storage with rain water inside is one. May you can check extended spots for further investigation

Sent from my ThinkPad S230uFurther exend the NDT and see the pitting (or any discontinuity) is in the base material or only HAZ area. You can even cut pipe little away and see inside.
