Hi, Mr. Prinsen,
Fit up was good, in the sense, root face, root gap, but there were only two stiffners given on the back side. I did not think in this angle, that insufficient stiffners could be a cause for bad impact values. Thanks for your advise.
As mentioned earlier I did a test at -18 C, but the results were -9 Joules average, where as there has been a good result in the 1mm and 5 mm fusion line, somewhere around 170 joules.
If I were to try another test plate, surely will follow your advise.
However, could it be due to very low heat input and rapid cooling due to higher thickness, which has resulted in a hard microstructure.
There were no heating element involved. The interpass temp was measured at 3 inches away from the fusion line.
Thanks
Rudolf

Did yoy secure the fit-up tight enough.
If you give the testplate room for free deformation, you'll get "strain aging", precipitation at dislocation areas, very bad for impact values.
Use 4 - 5 stiffeners on the back side of the test weld on 40 cm weldlength, first (allmost) completely weld on the front side, then place stiffeners on the front side, remove stiffeners on the back side, clean the backside of the root, and finalize the back weld
After complete cool-down, remove the stiffeners
p.s. Use stiffeners of 35 mm thick, at least 300 mm long, 80 mm high, connect them with fillet welds, z=15 mm to the test plates
