the code is saying that if the thickness difference is 1/4t, then you don't need to taper because code allows a 1/4t offset for your specific thickness (8mm) as per UW33, but because your thickess difference is 2.5mm, then you have to taper the abutting ends with a 3:1 taper which is not much.

For circumferencial joint joining two thicknesses for a pressure vessel  e.g. 8 mm and 10.5 mm what is maximum allowable offset ?  As per uw 33 it comes out to be 2 mm .my question is it can not be tapered transition as the thk difference is less than 3 mm as per uw 9.  Now if we match ID then the offset will be 2.5 mm and we can not taper the joints also.  Please suggest.
