Backing is a non-essential variable, QW-402.5, for most common welding processes.
ASME Section IX addresses non-essential variables in QW-200.1(c) thusly;
“Changes may be made in the nonessential variables of a WPS to suit production requirements without requalification provided such changes are documented with respect to the essential, nonessential, and, when required, supplementary essential variables for each process. This may be by amendment to the WPS or by use of a new WPS.”
So:
(1) Your weld must be within the qualified ranges for all the essential variables and, if impact testing is required, supplementary essential variables.
(2) Your WPS must be revised/or new WPS written to allow the “new” non-essential variable
(3) Your weldor must be properly qualified per Article III (if required)
