Re: [MW:9611] Effect of Polarity Change in SMAW

Dear Limesh,

"In DCEP the electricity flows into the tip of the welding rod and concentrates about two-thirds of the heat, which gives good penetration. DCEP is usually used on thicker steels.

In DCEN the electricity flows out of the rod, concentrating about one-third of the heat on the rod. Less penetration makes this a very good choice for thinner steels."

From the above extract, it's clear that more heat is required at electrode for thicker steels so DCEP would be the right choice, for welding some of the nonferrous materials like Al, GTAW shall be used with AC current.

Can you please mention material thickness and the reason to change polarity, also which specific nonferrous materials are you talking about?

Dear All,

In SMAW process, generally the polarity is DCEP(Direct Current Electrode Positive).I would like to get some advise on my following queries.

1. Is there any problem, if I am changing the polarity to DCEN in SMAW process?

2. Is this polarity change has any effect on metallurgical properties of materials comes under carbon steel family?

3. Is this polarity change has any effect on metallurgical properties of non ferrous materials?

Regards,

Limesh
