RE: [MW:3774] painting before hydrotest for B31 piping

do you need it for B31.1 or B31.3? pl. refer above interpretation # 5-23, may also find similar interpretations in #2-6, and 3-10

Interpretation: 5-23

Subject: ANSI/ASME 831, Hydrotest Preparation

Date issued: June 11, 1987

File: B3 1-86-033

Question: May all joints, including welds, used in piping systems covered by ANSI/ASME B31.1,

ANSI/ASME 831.3, ASME/ANSI 831.4, ANSI/ASME 831.8, ANSi/ASME B31.9, and ANSI/ASME

Daniel,

I attached the interpretation of B-31.3 code on the issue of painting before hydrotest:-

  • In ASME, B-31.3-2006 Clause 345.3.1  specifies, All joints, welds (including
structural attachment welds to pressure-containing components),and bonds shall be left uninsulated and exposed for examination during leak testing, except that joints previously tested in accordance with this Code may be insulated or covered.

  • All joints may be primed and painted prior to leak testing unless a sensitive leak
test is required. The word may is suggestive not mandatory.

  • However  the best practice for  painting ,before or after hydrotest may be mutually resolved with client, depending on the interest of the project.

  • Painting before hydro test may involve double and redundtant work.Especially if the defect is detected on a painted surface during hydro test.area to be repaired would require the paint to be stripped and repainted after successful repair.

I hope this would  clarify the issue. Appreciate inputs from the others.

Thanks.

Hi,

I have a strange situation about Hydrostatic Test ......

Until now we used to let all welds of piping system no painted........

now our client read in B31.3 and open the discussion that in code is wrote that is allowed to paint the welds before hydrostatic test......

What do you think about that?????

regards
