Re: [MW:31522] ASME Material Re-certification

Hello Sir,
I have few Plates & Pipes which are in the open yard (Open to atmosphere condition) since last 10 years. Few Plates & Pipes have few remaining marking. MTCs are also not available. Shall we re-certify and use it after 10 years?

Is there any Provisions for Max.validity of Material Certification by Code, If i even retrieve all MTCs somehow for the materials which are still having marking on it?

Regards,
Hardik Desai

You have to explain to the inspector that the physics of the metallurgy dont make any difference between plates and pipes. This is basic metallurgy

Thank you George for the precise information. However, whether the inspector accept SA-20(for plates) when we perform above mentioned activities on seamless pipes like SA-106, although the chemical elements are similar on pipes and plates.

Kind Regards

The answer is given in SA-20 - 8.3.2. If your Al content is 0,020% or higher you dont need to do any test

Thank you George for your valuable advice. If you see PG 10.2.2.3, it requires the documentation of killed steel. How to document whether the steel is killed or not, except mentioning the Silicon/Aluminium content. Is it possible to perform some tests?

Best Regards

Since the Code is Sect I + B31.1 you have to use PG-10. The  approach is similar to UG-10.  Since you lack full identification  and If you know the spec of the materials then you implement PG-10.2 . If not then you implement PG-10.3. In both cases you have to perform chemical analysis and mechanical tests

Dears,
How can I recertify raw pipes, where the material certificates are missing/cannot be recovered..! The code of construction is ASME Sec I & B31.1. As per Sec viii UG-10, is it possible to recertify pipes that don't have certificates, by performing mechanical tests? Please share your knowledge with regard to this. Your reply would be highly appreciated.

Best Regards
