Fw: [MW:20836] Regarding fillet weld


A. 8 mm throat of a miter fillet             :  8 mm thk. (x) 1.414 = 11.32 Leg Length

B. 7 mm leg + 2 mm excess weld metal  : 7 mm leg  (x) 0.707  = 5 mm throat (2 mm RF does not contribute to
                                                          strength. only throat gives the strength for a joint)

Cmiter fillet with 10mm leg                :10 mm leg (x) 0.707  = 7 mm throat. (min. perpendicular distance)

D   concave fillet with 11mm leg            :11 mm leg (x) 0.707 = 7.8 mm throat.
                                                         (assuming min. perpendicular distance)         
 
As u have seen, throat only takes care of the strength of a fillet joint.

So, B & C are ruled out.

In A & B, only A with 8 mm throat & 11.32  mm leg will have maximum strength.

Please advise me which of the fillet weld joint is strongest      (assuming they are all made using the same material and welded using the same WPS) ?

A             8 mm throat of a mitre fillet
B             7 mm leg + 2 mm excess weld metal
C             mitre fillet with 10mm leg
D             concave fillet with 11mm leg
