[MW:13930] WATER QUENCHING OF S.S. PQR

Hi,

Perhaps you are refeering to Solution Annealing (Annealing the weldment @ 1038 degC, followed by water quench)in order to eliminate Carbide precipitation but this is an expensive and impractical procedure, So if weldments operate in sever corrosive environments or within the sensitization range, either extra low carbon grades (E304L, E308L) or stabilized grades are needed.

Manpreet Singh

Dear Experts,

Is it advisable to water quench the Austenitic S.S. PQR (6 mm. Base Metal Thk., SA 240 Tp. 316L) subsequently after each pass and before proceeding for next pass?

Same procedure was followed during PQR of 6 mm. to 10 mm. base metal Thk. SA 240 Tp. 304L PQR to control the inter pass temp. max. 100ยบ C. But, unfortunately, the PQR was failed in IGC test as per ASTM A 262 Pr. E. Intermetallic ditches observed in weld metal, and in H.A.Z. and Parent Metal- Ditch structure observed. Also one root bend was failed in testing. What will be the reason?

Which precautions to be taken during qualification of 6 mm. Base Metal Thk., SA 240 Tp. 316L PQR and what will be the qualified max. range of base metal thickness?

Please share your experience with me.

Thanks & regards,
