The Directive concerns items such as vessels, pressurised storage containers, heat exchangers, steam generators, boilers, industrial piping, safety devices and pressure accessories. Such pressure equipment is widely used in the process industries (oil & gas, chemical, pharmaceutical, plastics and rubber and the food and beverage industry), high temperature process industry (glass, paper and board), energy production and in the supply of utilities, heating, air conditioning and gas storage and transportation.
The ATEX directive consists of two EU directives describing what equipment and work environment is allowed in an environment with anexplosive atmosphere.
From the French-

ATEX Directive 94/9/EC
The ATEX Directive identifies two groups of equipment.
Group 1 equipment is intended for use in mining applications. Divided into categories M1 and M2. M1 identifies equipment that must continue to operate when a potentially explosive atmosphere is present. M2 identifies equipment that does not operate when a potentially explosive atmosphere is present.
Group 2 is intended for all other situations. Divided into categories 1,2 and 3. Category 1 equipment is intended for use in Zone O situations. Category 2 equipment is intended for use in Zone 1 situations. Category 3 equipment is intended for use in Zone 2 situations.

Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)
PUWER replaces the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1992 and
carries forward these existing requirements with a few changes and additions, for
example the inspection of work equipment and specific new requirements for mobile
work equipment. Many aspects of PUWER should therefore be familiar to you.
The Regulations require risks to people's health and safety, from equipment that
they use at work, to be prevented or controlled. In addition to the requirements
of PUWER, lifting equipment is also subject to the requirements of the Lifting
Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998
What equipment is covered by the Regulations?
Generally, any equipment which is used by an employee at work is covered, for
example hammers, knives, ladders, drilling machines, power presses, circular saws,
photocopiers, lifting equipment (including lifts), dumper trucks and motor vehicles.
Similarly, if you allow employees to provide their own equipment, it too will be
covered by PUWER and you will need to make sure it complies.
