[MW:4268] MW-4242- WPS-Pipe to Flange-For Qualification

Hello Krishna,

Are you raising this query with respect to welding procedure qualification for Low Temperature application ? If so then the answer to your query is as such:-

·        Generally Flange materials, e.g.  Carbon steel , SA 105, SA 350  are classified as P1 Group-2 materials (70 Ksi series), while majority of C.S pipes such as SA 106, SA 333, etc  are classified as  P1 Group-1 materials (60 Ksi series).

·        Well at the same composition, differences in mechanical properties between forged flanges and hot formed pipes arise due to the manufacturing and subsequent heat treatments (as explained below).

·        Group No is an essential variable, where impact requirements are there as per design code.

·        A PQR qualified on P1Gr1 material (say pipe) to P1Gr2 material (say forging) , would qualify the WPS for welding  of P1Gr1  materials to same , P1Gr2 to same, and welding between P1Gr1  to P1Gr2 material using  the same welding consumables.

If there are no impact test requirements, PQR may be qualified on any P no and Group No combination. The applicable clause in ASME Sec-IX towards this (impart test/ Group No)  is QW-403.5.

Thanks.

Generally flange materials will be subjected to additional heat treatment and special processes like forging etc.

To make sure qualification weld makes a sound joint between pipe and specially treated flange material, it is recommended to qualify welding procedure with pipe and flange when welding of flanges is involved.

Reputed flange manufacturers will also supply special puff pieces of same dimensions of pipe undergone same heat treatment and other processes of flanges on request and these can be straightly welded to pipe piece and easy to machine for welding tests.

Regards,

Ramakrishna

Hi all,
Could one clarify the reason behind using pipe to flange for qualification of a welding procedure.
Why pipe to pipe is not used?

thanx
