The ASME B31 Code does not give us the limit. I suggest you to check the engineering document (drawing). What you're looking for might be at there. Some peoples call them as miter.

 

From several projects where I was there, restriction between the edges of the two circumferential welds is judged by the engineering department.  Some of them specify that the distance between the two of circumferential butt welds shall not be less than four times from the pipe thickness or 30 mm, whichever is greater. But other document also specifies 5 times from the pipe thickness.

 

However, all what you can do is to avoid the HAZ and stress effect. This may be a 1 inch for thin material or more than 4 inches for great wall thickness material.

 Hi,

Considering the heat affected zone , It has been fixed as a thumb rule  4times of pipe thickness .

There are no specific code  as for as my knowledge.

i have same problem in last project, power piping process .According B31.1, we don't found information,  we get approbation from engineering.

can anybody exlain what is the distance between two circumferential butt joints ?  we are welding 5" pipeline joints of A53 Gr.B
