Dear Mr. Mahesh

Yes you are correct, if the welder is Qualified in P1(CS) he is qualified to weld all metals of P‐No. 1 through P‐No. 15F, P‐No. 34, and P‐No. 41 through P‐No. 49. Since SS material falls in P8, the welder can weld SS Base Metal also.

Dear Mr. Madheswarn

Since you haven't mentioned the Code Reference, I'm considering ASME SEC IX which is widely used in the industry. As per ASME SEC IX, if the welder is qualified to weld the filler ER70S2, which falls under F-Number F6, he can weld all the filler which falls under F-Number F6, as per QW-433. Since ER316 and other filler wires of SS fall under F-Number F6, the welder can weld these SS Filler wires. Note that other essential variables shall also be noted like Backing, Purging which depends upon the Welding process.

Also please note which Code is referred and based on that this qualification also changes.

Some contractors use the essential variable tables (QW-352 thru 357) to minimize their costs. For instance, they might test the welder for stainless steel material by using carbon steel material.

Consider the actual project material is stainless steel and you do not want to waste stainless steel material for testing.

You ask the welder to weld in carbon steel material but with stainless steel filler metal.

Ø Based on the essential variable table P number 1 (Carbon Steel) qualifies P 8 (Stainless Steel), and the

Ø  F number is the same.

Ø So you qualify your welder for stainless steel material by using carbon steel material but stainless steel filler metal.

Ø Adding back gas(purge gas) for SS welding -NO ESSENTIAL VARIABLE

Dear Madheswaran ,

As general understanding of code  ,If the Essential variables of CS qualified by the welder are not changes, then the welder is allowed to weld SS material as permitted by the ASME SEC IX , QW-423, There is only one major change in SS welding is back purging(backing). A welder qualified without backing, can weld with backing as per ASME sec IX this is only limited to GTAW process/the process where essential variables are not changed

So a welder qualified in CS without purging can weld SS with purging. But one has to consider other variables like are this welder cable to do welding in case of purging, is he aware of welding variable, other welding requirements to be followed for material mainly inter pass, travel speeds.

Considering the base material chemistry , metallurgy and criticality of the job one shall not allow CS qualified welder for SASS, DSS, SDSS welding even though code permits.

Re: [MW:33328] WELDING CONSUMABLE EXPIRY DATE

Dear Sujith

 Eletrode self life:

 1. SMAW electrodes shall not used more than 3 years

2. Solid Wires, GTAW/GMAW/SAW-No shelf Life.

3. Cored Wire –FCAW- No shelf life

4. SAW Fluxes- Shelf life 2-3 years depends on the flux condition.

International Welding codes does not specify the expiry dates of welding electrodes.  example, The shelf-life depends on electrode manufacturing methods, quality control followed and how electrodes are handledThe shelf-life depends on the coating type, type of packing, storing conditions and at a temperature, humidity electrodes are stored. Based on all the these  points electrodes manufacturer decides shelf life

However following rules shall be followed about usage

1.      SMAW electrodes should be FIFO

2.       If electrode coating damaged and shows sign of peeling, rusting & cracks those shall be discarded

3.      Some of the manufacturer recommendations Electrodes older than 3years shall not be used or some manufacturer says 5years if electode stores at dry conditions and with proper packing.

some of the code manufacturer specifies Appropriate storage and handling of electrodes/ fluxes, other consumables and how Electrodes shall be shall be maintained, & most of the manufacturer's recommendations and as a good engineering practices electrode can be used 3 years Max. this time period of 3-5 years is arrived by manufacturers based on deterioration of properties due to Moisture absorption by electrodes packing, normal packing will not give required protection against moisture for longer time. Vacuum packed / hermetically sealed packed Electrodes are not affected and electrodes can be stored more time provided the vacuum/seal is not damaged. if Electrodes/ flux, are stored in a dry environment with around RH< 40-50%, deterioration effect can be minimized. So in such situations electrodes can utilized for more than 3years say up to 5years

Thanks & regards,

Re: [MW:33320] Pickling and passivation need before painting SS surfaces

Normally in the seat they apply stellite overlay  which is cobalt based for wear resistance. Only stainless steel can be pickled and passivated.

Dear Experts

Thanks all for very valuable support.

There is an overlay welding involved in the body seat of the valve. Do we need pickling and passivation inside only in this case?

Outside there will be painting.
