Yes you can use. infact its industrial practice to have TIG/ SMAW/ GMAW root run and hot pass with a sufficient throat thickness which is followed by SAW welding.

ThanksIs it ok if we use in backing first Run with SMAW AND further subsequent Saw weld? Can you provide me any clause of sec-9 acceptance or non acceptance.Regards--On Mon, 22 Oct 2018 at 8:32 AM, sandeep kumar <sandeep...@gmail.com> wrote:according to section 9, deletion of backing & joint design are non-essential variable, Refer QW 402.1 & 402.4. So there is no issue. However in SAW, you need to have backing material either as removable backing strip or permanent backing to hold the high heat & weld penetration. in thumb rule, the depth of penetration in SAW is 0.1 X 100 amp for square butt and 0.7 X 100 amp for Y groove welds. In your case, you have to make separate WPS based on your PQR for SAW only, which should clearly state the applicable proper joint configuration & welding pass sequence. Thanks & regards--Sandeep Kumar
