RE: [MW:27384] Difference between Bolt Torqueing and Bolt Tensioning

Diff btwn "Torquing & Tensioning :

Basically definitions :

Torquing is "The loading / stressing bolts using using manual or hydraulic torque wrenches".

Tensioning is loading / stressing bolts using hydraulic jacking tools.

Tightening can be defined as "The making tight of flange joint by torquing or tensioning the bolts"

Bolts shd b tightened in a controlled sequence as under :

E.g. 4 bolts flange : 1 -3 -2- 4
16 bolt flange: 1- 9 -5- 13- 3 -11 -7- 15 -2 -10- 6- 14- 4 -12 -8- 16
32 bolts flange : 1 -17 -9 -25 -5 -21 13 29 3 19 11 27 7 23 15 31 2 18 10 26 6 22 14 30 8 24 16 32 4 20 12 28

PK M,

Bolt torqueing refers to the circumferential moment (ft-lbs, or m-N) exerted on a bolt-nut assembly, or on a bolt and threaded-hole assembly, to tighten the assembly.

The tightening of the assembly imparts a tensile stress (lbs/in2, or N/m2) in the bolt, and a compressive stress in the components being clamped between the bolt-nut assembly, or between the bolt and the component containing the threaded hole.

Therefore, bolt tensioning is the result of bolt torqueing.
