RE: [MW:22965] Regarding TIG v/s MIG

Dear Experts,

Could anyone advise me on the best route to follow regarding plasma cutting of stainless steel, I am aware that this is a welding forum, but it would be interesting to hear from people that use this cutting method and machines in their processes.

We are a company that have tube mills. We produce thin walled  stainless steel tubes of various diameters. The material thicknesses we use are 0.3mm, 0.25mm, 0.2mm and 0.15mm.

The stainless steel we use are of various grades e.g. 316, 321, etc..

We are currently cutting tubes on the fly circumferentially. We have a plasma torch mounted  on a rotating head, and cuts the tube as it passes through the head.

The problem we have is something we refer to as 'plasma dust', this is residue of the steel after the cut, this residue sits on the inside of the tube near the cutting edge.

We are looking at ways to reduce this 'plasma dust' issue. We are researching new model plasma cutting machines that can cut our tubes with minimum or no 'plasma dust', or some other type of cutting technology.

If anyone has experience or information that can help us in this regard, this information will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Naasief
