Hi, Han
Pls note the followings:
1) If you have done back chippind then possibly you have removed all the weld metal deposited by GTAW.
In this case your procedure is qualified only with SAW with backing. Welder is also qualified only for SAW.
2) In this case you should use GTAW process after back chipping so that you will have complete 5 deposition
with GTAW & 16MM with SAW.
With this your procedure & welders will be qualified with GTAW+SAW OR GTAW & SAW separately.
Regards,
Zakir Ali.

Zakir Ali.

Subject: [MW:17520] Combined welding process qualification
Dear Expert,
Could you please give your opinion for following matter?
Combined welding process: GTAW + SAW
Test coupon: Single U
Plate thickness: 20 mm
GTAW - root pass and hot pass (approx. 4 or 5 mm)
SAW - filler pass and capping (approx. 16 mm)
Root to be back gouging and filled with SAW.
Question:
1. Does this welder / welding operator qualify to weld with GTAW and SAW? Root to be back gouging and filled with SAW.
2. Is separate qualification required to qualified this welder / welding operator for GTAW + SAW?
